Words by Andrew Willis
London feels like a city built on contradiction — tradition and rebellion, elegance and grime, restraint and absolute chaos living beside each other without ever needing to reconcile. People carry themselves with a kind of controlled confidence; there is wit, intelligence, history, class, fashion, music, sex, anger, humour, and eccentricity everywhere, but very little of it asks for attention directly. London understands that you can be impeccably dressed and completely unhinged, deeply conventional and radically individual, polite while saying something devastating, or surrounded by centuries of rules while quietly breaking every one of them. The city has power because it does not need to constantly announce its importance — it already knows what it is. What I love is the permission London gives you to be strange without explaining yourself. Punk can exist beside royalty, Savile Row beside a filthy club, old money beside kids inventing an entirely new culture in the street. Everyone seems to be carrying some private world underneath the surface. London reminds me that confidence does not always have to be loud, rebellion does not always have to look rebellious, and being civilized has absolutely nothing to do with being well behaved.
